Your Partner
In 2021, I decided to pursue my dream of becoming a polyglot and exploring different parts of the world, but it wasn't until 2022 that I took it more seriously.
Here’s a bit about who I am, what I’m doing here, and why I'm your partner in crime for languages…
First, welcome, and thank you for stopping by!
I’m María De Los Ángeles, a Colombian; passionate about art, history, food, and languages. Currently (2024) I’m 24 years old (I turn 25 on October 26!).
Viajandoe en Idiomas is a space created to share my journey in language learning through the digital world until I achieve fluency. It aims to transparently show the reality of learning and acquiring a language in a self-taught and “free” way, while also creating a space for those passionate about discovering places and language lovers; sharing and creating tools, content, and opportunities that help in our processes and experiences.
If you’re curious, here’s more about how this space came to be and the languages I’m learning:
I was at home, and I had already decided to start learning English; however, I was debating whether to share it with others through social media or keep my process “confidential.” After analyzing the situation a bit, I concluded: “You know what, Ángeles, let’s do it, let’s share this with the world honestly. Maybe there are many people who need some help or want to see someone who also finds learning a language challenging. Let’s show the process, and if we can help someone on this journey, great.”
Then I started thinking about what the next language I would learn would be, and I decided it would be Turkish. The next step was to come up with a name for this process.
As someone who once found it difficult to have dreams or, rather, to dream at all; when I “started to dream” and set goals, the dream of exploring places was also activated. That’s how I knew the name of this journey had to be related to languages and discovering places… boom! Viajando en Idiomas was born.
This video is a reaction to my first extended conversation speaking in English, or well, trying to speak in English. Honestly, listening to yourself and noticing the mistakes isn’t very pleasant haha, but hey, it’s part of the journey.
Before starting this journey, the only language I could speak was Spanish (my native language XD); I had a little knowledge of English (the verb TO BE that most of us see in school), but nothing more.
I can say that currently, I understand a large part of English when I listen or talk to a native speaker or watch videos, and I can also maintain a basic conversation or explain myself well enough. Keeping in mind that the time and method I have dedicated to learning languages haven’t been the best, I feel proud of what I have achieved so far.
Status:
Learning/Speaking ENGLISH (I can speak it but not dive into complex topics).
Learning TURKISH (I am in the stage of gaining vocabulary and understanding verb tenses).
A bit of GERMAN (Duolingo is a good partner for now and some videos from the YouTube channel “EasyGerman”), however, I am only sharing my learning process on social media for English and Turkish.
If you see me on the street, avoid following me haha; I invite you to come over and have a pleasant conversation (as much as possible).
On the other hand, the best way to follow me is by subscribing to or joining the social media channels of Viajando en Idiomas.
Learning a language is about venturing into the unknown and stepping out of your comfort zone. For me, learning a language can feel like solving a crime; you need to have a clear goal to devise a plan to discover and decipher that language… that’s where the phrase I often use to greet or say goodbye on social media comes from: “Ángeles, your Partner In Crime Of Languages” because each language has its mystery, and if you have the chance to have a partner to solve that mystery, that’s phenomenal!
There are different ways you can support this project and this journey:
Remember, the above is an invitation, not an obligation; however, I will be truly grateful for your generosity. Thank you for believing in and allowing this project to continue growing and improving. Happy Journey!
I will try to respond as soon as possible 😉
